Car error codes how to read and interpret

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are a code system defined concurrently by SAE J2012 and ISO 15031 standards for use in vehicle diagnostics. A code defined in this way conveys information about which vehicle components are associated with the fault and the nature of the fault. We can read the codes through the mandatory OBD II (On-Board Diagnostic II) connector, which can be found in almost every vehicle today. The main reason for implementing the OBD standard was emissions control issues. A range of devices can be sewn to read trouble codes – from popular interfaces equipped with Bluetooth connectivity to the most expensive diagnostic testers officially supporting specific brands. A typical interface is placed in the OBD connector of the car, and the corresponding software (on a laptop, smartphone or tablet) presents the read fault data.

How to read error codes?

The standard implies a five-character coding system. The individual letters of the code identify the fault in an orderly fashion. The first sign describes the vehicle layout.

  • P – Powertrain;
  • B – Body (B – Body);
  • C – chassis, chassis system (C – Chassis);
  • U – network communication (U – User Network)

The second character specifies who is responsible for the definition of the code:

  • 0 and 3- code defined in the SAE/ISO standard, the same in all vehicles*;
  • 1 and 2 – the code defined by the manufacturer, the meaning of the code depends on the specific model.

*Note: for codes relating to the drive train whose second character is 3, there is another distinction:

  • Codes P30xx – P33xx – codes defined by individual manufacturers, depend on the specific model;
  • Codes P34xx – P39xx – codes the same in all vehicles.

The third mark defines a subgroup related to the car’s systems:

  • 0 – general defects;
  • 1 – fuel supply and air supply;
  • 2 – fuel supply and air supply (applies to injectors);
  • 3 – ignition system;
  • 4 – a fault related to exhaust emissions;
  • 5 – Speed and idle control systems;
  • 6 – a fault related to the output or input circuits of the central control unit;
  • 7, 8, 9 – defects related to the transmission system (gearbox, clutch);
  • A, B, C – faults relating to hybrid drives;

Subsequent characters specify the error number in the list specified in the standard.

In some cases, we won’t achieve much with a cheap tester, and dedicated equipment for specific brands will be necessary. These are often very expensive solutions that are not usually found in smaller workshops.

Diagnostics

For many people, reading error codes with a diagnostic tester completes the diagnostic process. In fact, determining the cause of the defect often only begins at this point. The conditions that cause error codes are stored in the controller’s software. If the condition is met, the error code is reported. In the case of the shaft position sensor, the computer is constantly counting pulses per revolution. If there are too many or too few pulses, an error code is reported.

A great many errors are due to problems with the electrical system such as insecure connections, especially within the ground. It wouldn’t hurt to routinely check the voltage between the ECU ground and the negative battery terminal. A simple fault in the electrical system – a weak ground connection – can spoof many signals, leading to false errors. Errors like “low input signal” or “high input signal” can occur if there is a break in the sensor circuit, even if the sensor itself is operational.

Let’s see how error codes are generated using the example of the pressure sensor on the injection rail. The signal from a typical pressure sensor should be in the range of 0.5 (zero pressure) – 4.5V (maximum pressure). The engine controller does not have an additional source of knowledge about the actual pressure on the strip. Errors related to the pressure sensor used in the sample software are: P0191 – out-of-range signal/operation, P0192 – low input signal” and P0193 – high input signal”. Sample conditions for their reporting (taken from service documentation):

  • If the voltage is less than 0.4V report code P0192.
  • If the voltage is more than 4.86V report P0193.
  • If the read pressure (converted from voltage) differs from the set pressure by more than 2MPa report P0191.
  • If the difference between the minimum and maximum signal is less than 0.015V also report P0191.

There are very many situations when an error code can even be misleading. Novice mechanics, in particular, tend to treat error codes quite naively. Below we will cite some typical cases in which caution should be exercised.

P0171/P0174 , “O2 sensor (Bank 1/2) – mixture too poor”.

In the case of the above error codes, we replace the O2 sensor (lambda probe) only in the last step. Remember that a poor mixture is excess air or too little fuel. Let’s start by carefully checking the intake manifold for leaks, this is a common cause of such errors. It is also worth checking the pump and replacing the fuel filter. A faulty MAF flow meter, MAP sensor, EGR valve or coolant temperature sensor may also be the culprit.

P0401/P0402 , “Exhaust gas recirculation system – insufficient/excessive flow detected”.

Before replacing the EGR valve, the intake and exhaust systems should be thoroughly checked. Although the valves are subject to wear and tear, it is quite a durable component. Check the intake system for leaks or obstructions. Similarly, the exhaust should be evaluated. Excessive soot accumulation near the valve itself can restrict flow leading to an error. The cause could also be too much soot on the exhaust gas temperature sensor or a faulty EGR differential pressure sensor.

P0301/P0302/P0303/P0304/… – “Cylinder 1/2/3/4/…. – ignition loss detected”

Codes related to the ignition loss phenomenon also require careful diagnostics. Detection of ignition dropout by the controller is made possible by monitoring engine speed with crankshaft and camshaft position sensors. Lack of fuel (injector), a malfunction in the ignition system (damaged coil , worn plug), or a compression problem in a specific cylinder can be responsible for the lack of ignition.

Not just codes

Even the most expensive diagnostic tester is still only a single source of data. As with the media, a single piece of information from a single source, even a reliable one, can turn out to be false. The diagnosis will be effective if the information can be confirmed or ruled out by other methods. Returning to the diagnostic examples cited earlier, we will show examples of tools that can be used.

Error codes related to rail pressure sensor (P0190, P0191, P0192, P0193, P0194)

  • Use a multimeter to check the sensor’s power supply and output signal.
  • Check the power supply and sensor output signal simultaneously with a dedicated RPT-5 tester.
  • Use the QST-5 sensor tester to check the sensor (even outside the vehicle).
  • Take measurements in the car with the EDIA-PRO analyzer.

Errors related to EGR valve (P0401, P0402)

  • Check the valve control signals with an oscilloscope (e.g. ScopeTester 5 or Scope DT).
  • Check the valve position sensor, the differential pressure sensor, and the exhaust gas temperature sensor with the QST-5 tester.

Error codes related to the lambda probe (P0171, P0174).

  • Use the QST-5 tester to check the manifold pressure sensor (MAP),
  • The QST-5 tester can also be used to check the operation of the coolant temperature sensor.
  • Use a multimeter to check the operation of the probe
  • Use a multimeter to check the operation of the fuel pump (the current drawn by the pump).
  • Check the output signal from the probe with an oscilloscope (such as ScopeTester 5 or Scope DT).

Errors related to misfire (P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, …).

  • Use a pressure gauge to check the compression pressure in each cylinder.
  • Alternatively, evaluate the compression pressure using an indirect method, such as EDIA-PRO.
  • You will check the differential pressure sensor and the exhaust gas temperature sensor with the QST-5 tester.

Summary

Although the topic of diagnostics is very broad, this should not discourage beginners. The most important thing is to analyze as much as possible the causes of the read errors, following the logic of the operation of the whole (as far as it is known). If we look at the read errors a little more suspiciously and learn to confirm faults, we will save a lot of time and unnecessarily replaced components.
