Battery load tester – how does it work?

Preparing the resistor for the battery test

  1. Check the condition of the battery tester and its cables. Make sure they are in good condition and have no mechanical damage.
  2. Ensure a safe place to conduct the test. Avoid explosive gases and flammable materials!
  3. You don’t need to check the status of the battery – the BLT600S resistor will do it for you.
  4. Your safety comes first! Familiarize yourself with the warning signs on the body of the resistor and comply with them.

Connecting the load tester to the battery

  1. Connect the connector to any battery terminal ( post, bolt, etc.) and apply the resistor tip to the other terminal. The test can be performed without polarity. The terminal can be connected to both the positive and negative post of the battery.
  2. Make sure the connections are strong and stable.
  3. The device will automatically excite itself as long as the voltage of the battery under test is higher than 1V, and then perform a performance test .
  4. If the resting voltage of the battery is less than 1V, you can manually turn on the tester by clicking the left button on the voltmeter panel.
  5. Make sure the battery under test is fully charged before proceeding with the load test.

Selection of parameters and load range of the resistor.

  1. On the tester, select the appropriate current load range depending on the battery capacity:
    • 12V: typically 200A, 400A, 600A ranges.
    • 6V: typically ranges of 100A, 200A, 300A.
  2. The selection of the range is made using the knobs on the resistor. The device has 3 circuits – each 200A for a 12V battery. When testing a 6V battery, the resistance of 1 spring is 100A.
The first circuit of the resistor is closed permanently. By tightening the knob, you close the circuit by activating the next winding. In this way you increase the resistance by another 200A/100A.

Performing a load test – basic.

  1. Press the device against the terminal.
  2. Observe the voltage measurement on the display. The tester will subject the battery to the declared load.
  3. Note the results:
    • With a working 12V battery – the voltage shown on the display should drop and stabilize above 8.5V
    • If the battery is faulty the voltage will drop towards 0V
  4. The load test should not last longer than 10s.

Perform a load test – semi-automatic.

  1. Press the left button of the voltmeter.
The display below the battery voltage will show an elapsed time bar measuring 6 sec, which will begin to fill up when the tester is pressed.
  2. Press the device against the terminal.
  3. Observe the voltage measurement on the display. The tester will subject the battery to the declared load and inform you with a double beep that the test is complete.
  4. Finish pressing the resistor – you can break the connection to the terminal of the battery under test.
  5. When the right button is pressed, the battery tester’s display will show a graphical voltage waveform, the maximum and minimum measured voltage and the measured voltage difference.
  6. The load test lasts for 6s – after this time the tester will announce the end of the data collection stage. When it exceeds 9s, an audible alarm is activated.

Turn off the tester and disconnect the wires.

  1. Before disconnecting the BLT600S battery tester, remember that the resistance windings are hot. If you touch them, you risk getting burned. Take care of your safety!
  2. Release the connection by detaching the resistor grommet from the terminal, and then disconnect the terminal from the battery.
  3. Put the device away in a safe place. Avoid contact of the heated surface of the resistor with flammable gases and materials!
  4. The device will automatically turn off 4 minutes after the last activity (pressing any of the buttons or taking a measurement). It is possible to manually turn off the tester by pressing (>1s) the right button for a longer time.

Analysis of the results and completion of the work.

  1. Compare the results obtained with the battery manufacturer’s recommended values.
  2. If necessary, submit the battery for further diagnosis or replacement.
  3. Store the tester in a dry and safe place, away from sources of heat and moisture.

Battery load tester BLT600S – what sets it apart?

  • Versatile performance: the BLT600S can test both 6V and 12V batteries with 100A /200A/ 300A (6V) or 200A /400A /600A (12V) loads.
  • Powered by two AA (LR6) batteries: Using popular AA batteries provides easy access to power and saves time and operating costs.
  • Automatic activation when input voltage is detected: the tester starts automatically when connected to the battery under test, saving the user time.
  • Automatic Power Off (APO): This feature saves batteries by automatically turning off the device after four minutes of inactivity.
  • Measuring System Selftest: The tester automatically checks its circuits after startup, which guarantees correct operation and reliable measurements.
  • Audible signaling: the BLT600S informs the user of the start and end of the test, and sounds an audible alarm if the recommended time is exceeded.
  • Bi-directional load testing: It is possible to test regardless of how the battery is connected to the battery terminals, which increases convenience.

Distinguishing technical parameters of the resistor:

  • Aluminum body with thick walls: The high temperature capacity of the body allows for longer operation without the risk of overheating the tester.
  • Extended and low profile: Allows work in hard-to-reach places, increasing the stability of the device.
  • 25mm² connection wire: Ensures safe conduction of high current, which improves cable life and device performance.
  • Modular thrust springs: With the ability to tighten the springs, the user adjusts the load to test different battery capacities.
  • Unique serial number: Each tester has an individual number, which helps identify the device and increases security.

Distinctive features of the load tester software :

  • Advanced Voltmeter Module: Graphically shows a graph of the voltage waveform, and records key parameters such as no-load voltage, under-load voltage and voltage drop for easy interpretation of results.
  • Precision and averaged modes: the tester offers the option of operating in precision mode with a refresh rate of 8 times per second or in averaged mode (average of 4 measurements), which stabilizes the displayed results.
  • Summary of parameters before shutdown: Before shutting down, the device presents a table with six key parameters, giving a complete overview of the tester’s operation.
  • Operating mode and battery status icons: Visual indicators provide information about the current operating mode and battery level for greater ease of use.
  • Graphic and audio indication of test time: A progress bar and audible signals indicate the 6-second test time, then alerts when the recommended time is exceeded. This is to maintain repeatability of measurement procedures.

Distinctive mechanical functions of the load tester :

The BLT600S battery load tester isn’t just a hand-held resistor – it’s a comprehensive solution that simplifies workshop operations. The SecureSpring mechanism is an advanced spring system used in the BLT600S, designed for optimal and safe operation during battery testing.
The key element of this mechanism is a specially selected spring of precisely defined hardness, which:

  • Minimizes pressure on battery terminals: The spring provides optimal resistance. Less pressure is needed to close the circuit, which affects the condition of the battery terminals during measurements.
  • Ensures smooth operation of the actuator: SecureSpring enables smooth and stable movements during operation of the device, which reduces blade slippage during operation.
  • It increases the comfort of work: With the right spring hardness, the operation of the device is more ergonomic, requiring less physical effort on the part of the user.
  • Increases device reliability: With SecureSpring, the tester operates more efficiently, longer and with less risk of damage, resulting in a longer life for the entire system.

This device increases the confidence of diagnosis and provides precise measurements. With its advanced features, and its robust construction and attention to detail, the BLT600S is indispensable in the daily work of professionals.
