  • inrush current,
  • A graphical percentage summary of the battery’s status and charge level,
  • Recommendations for the battery (charge, replace, urgently replace).

You will perform tests on batteries:

  • EFB (reinforced)
  • AGM / VRLA ( maintenance-free)
  • SLI (standard, lead-acid).

Inrush current can be specified according to one of five standards:

  • EN: from 40 A to 2000 A
  • SAE: 40 A to 2000 A
  • DIN: from 30 A to 1200 A

Step-by-step battery test with DBT 12+:

To test the battery with the DBT-12+ tester, follow these steps:

Step 1: Preparing for the Test

  1. Checking the Battery:
    • Make sure the battery is in good physical condition – no cracks, electrolyte leaks or visible damage,
    • Clean the battery terminals of corrosion and dirt,
    • You do not need to remove the battery from the vehicle.
    • Remember the precautions

Step 2: Connecting the Tester

  1. Connecting Clamps:
    • Connect the red clip to the positive (+) terminal of the battery,
    • Connect the black clip to the negative (-) terminal of the battery,
    • If you connect in reverse you will get a message about incorrect polarity.
    • Make sure the clips are securely fastened and make good contact with the battery terminals. The tester will display a message if the connection is improper or weak.

Step 3: Select Test Mode

  1. Test Mode Selection:
    • Select “Battery Test” from the main menu using the navigation buttons.
    • You can also select “Quick Test.”
  2. Battery Type Selection:
    • Enter the optional car registration number,
    • Specify the type of battery under test (SLI, AGM, VRLA, EFB). Selecting the type of battery allows the device to perform the test more accurately.

Step 4: Conduct the Test

  1. Introduction Battery Parameter Standards:
    • Select the standard by which it is specified (EN, SAE, DIN, IEC, CCA),
    • Select the inrush current rating,
    • Enter the temperature of the battery.
  2. Starting the Test:
    • Press the “Start” button to start the test. The DBT-12+ tester will perform several tests, including a test of the current voltage, inrush current and internal resistance of the battery.
  3. Reading Results:
    • Once the test is complete, the results will be displayed on the tester’s screen. Results include:
      • Current battery voltage,
      • Measured inrush current values,
      • Percentage of battery charge,
      • Suggestion of battery condition: good/poor,
      • Very precise reading of the results in the computer program.

Step 5: Save and Print Results

  1. Recording Results:
    • The DBT-12 tester automatically saves the results of recent tests, which can be viewed at a later time on a computer.
  2. Printing Results:
    • If the tester is equipped with WiFi which allows direct printing to a printer.
  3. Sending Results:
    • The results can also be emailed with the help of a computer application.

Step 6: Analysis and Action

  1. Analysis of Results:
    • Analyze the test results and take appropriate action as recommended by the tester. This may include recharging the battery, replacing it or further diagnostics on the vehicle.
  2. Informing the Customer:
    • Provide the customer with the test results and recommendations for further action, including any service needs.

DBT-12+ – FAQ

I lost my software CD. How can I get the software?

The software for the device can be downloaded after prior registration and logging in to our website: https://dte.com.pl/en/my-data/

Is it possible to update the device firmware?

Firmware (firmware) does not require updating. In the event of a problem with the device or the need to change the DBT-12 + software, please contact the technical support: support@dte.com.pl.

Can I test 6V batteries?

Yes, the device supports both 6V and 12V batteries. Testing 6V batteries is possible from 5V. Both batteries used in motorcycles and in agricultural tractors can be tested. It is also possible to test the charging and starting system in the 6V circuit.

What current should be set when testing a 10Ah battery?

When testing the starter battery, we specify the inrush current according to one of the standards (e.g. EN, DIN). Inrush current refers to the possibility of a short-term load of the battery with a very high current. 10Ah refers to the battery capacity, determining the product of the current and the time leading to discharge. When testing a 10Ah battery, set the starting current according to one of the standards. The starting current of a motorcycle battery with a capacity of 10Ah may be (example value) 160A (EN).

Can I test a battery from a UPS or a child’s toy?

Yes, although the test is different from the car battery. The tester tests the batteries based on the estimated starting capacity and relating it to a nominal value. Popular AGM batteries used in UPS or toys are intended for buffer or cyclic operation, and not for starting engines. Therefore, their starting ability is not usually marked according to the standards. Such batteries can be tested with DBT-12 +, for example in the “Fast” mode. Compare the measured value of the internal resistance (given in mΩ). Information on the correct internal resistance should be found in the datasheet of the battery – they are usually available on the websites of manufacturers or distributors.
